Cedar Rapids
Mary Lou Moritz, 81, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Maquoketa, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 12, 2025, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.
She was born on November 11, 1943, to John and Bertha (Cole) Hill. She graduated from Waukon High School in 1961. She met the love of her life, Don, when she got a job at the Waukon County Home which was managed by her future in-laws. She married Don on July 15, 1961, and they went on to have 6 children. Mary was happiest when she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved playing cards, especially Canasta, and was very competitive even when playing against family. She loved to go to casinos and always came home with more than she went with.
Mary is survived by daughters, Peggy (Jeff) Krohn and LuAnn Paul of Cedar Rapids; sons, Richard (Laurie) Moritz and Ron (Theresa) Moritz both of Cedar Rapids and Jeff (Michele) Moritz of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Ashley (Jared) Schrafel, Mark Paul, Shelley Spangler, Meagan (Aaron) Foster, Stephanie Spangler, Erin (Brody) Stueck, Alicia (Addi) Allen, Tyler Moritz; great-grandchildren, Kylie, Eleanor, Madelyn, Emmi, Sawyer, Westen, Tayler, Cade, Hazel, Cheyenne, Arizona and another boy due in September.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don; daughter, Cherie Spangler; granddaughter, Jayne Moritz; her parents, John and Bertha Hill, brothers, Johnny, Walter, Melvin, Floyd, Sam and Eddie Hill; sisters, Grace Bechtel, Agnes Seitz, and Betty Ronan.
The family will have a small service at a later date. The Moritz family would like to thank Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for the excellent care they gave Mary in her final days.
