Mary Lee Dixon Flynn passed away at her home in Iowa City on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, with her husband, Tom, by her side.
Mary Lee was born on
Feb. 1, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Everett and Maxine Dixon. Mary Lee grew up in Clinton, Iowa, graduating from Clinton High School
and moving onto the University of Iowa, where
she received a bachelor's degree in 1971. Mary Lee
went on to obtain a master's degree in social work in 1980. Early in her work career, Mary Lee was employed as a social worker for the Iowa Department of Human Services in Dubuque and Johnson Counties. For 25 years in her career, Mary Lee was a Real Estate Agent in Iowa City, most recently with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Professionals.
Mary Lee was a voracious reader, an avid tennis player, a weekend gardener, an accomplished snow skier and an artist at heart. She possessed an infectious laugh a beautiful smile and a wonderful sense of humor. Mary Lee treated everyone as a friend and brightened every room she ever entered. Mary Lee will be missed terribly by family and friends but her loving and caring spirit will always light our hearts.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Thomas; brothers, Rick (Nancy) Dixon and Chris (Gail) Dixon; nephews, Matt (Liz) Dixon, Mark (Jennifer) Dixon and Brian Metzger; nieces, Jennifer (Scott) Asher, Lauren (Travis) Irvin and Elizabeth Dixon; sister-in-law, Betty Rea; and brother-in-law, Edward Flynn.
Mary Lee was preceded in death by her parents.
The family thanks Iowa City Hospice for their help during Mary Lee's illness and donations in Mary Lee's name can be made to Iowa City Hospice.
A gathering for family and friends to celebrate Mary Lee's life will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service Iowa City. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing. Burial will be at Rock Island Arsenal Cemetery.
