Mary E. Kucera, 81, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at her home. Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion by the Rev. David O'Connor. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service followed by a rosary will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by Deacon Steve Ford. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and also after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Mary is survived by her seven children, Denise (Bill) Elliott of Marion, Deb (Steve) Ford of Center Point, Dennis Kucera of Cedar Rapids, Diane (Jeff) Evans of Robins, Dan (Jennifer) Kucera, Donna (Jay) Fields and Dawn (John) Fields, all of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Joe Jr. (Mary Lois) Zerbe of Davenport and Jim (Lynda) Zerbe of St. Louis; and her greatest joy was her 17 grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon and Amy Elliott, Joel (fiancee Alicia), Lindsey and Katie Ford, Cory Kucera, Jessica and Blake Evans, Joey and Nicholas Kucera, Rebecca and Adam Fields, Alyssa Kucera, Stephanie, Madison and Tyler Fields.
Mary was born June 19, 1932, in Solon, the daughter of Joseph and Beatrice (Zenisek) Zerbe. She graduated from St. Patrick Catholic High School in 1950. She married John David Kucera on June 19, 1954, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They were later divorced.
Mary worked at AEGON for 19 years, retiring in 1998. She was a mem-ber of St. Joseph Cath-olic Church in Marion.
Mary was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and was the organizer of her 1950 graduating class of St. Patrick High School and the AEGON Retirees luncheons. Twice a month she made main entrees for meals at the Mission of Hope and Catholic Worker House, of which her family also helped her prepare. She also supported and helped with Never Give Up, an ovarian cancer awareness organization.
Mary will be remembered for her selflessness and love she had for her family and friends. She would always be there to lend a helping hand and cared for her family with her whole heart.
She will be greatly missed by many family and friends.
