Mary Jane "Janie" Whitesell, 95, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call
at the Cedar Memorial Chapel after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Survivors include her daughter, Diane (Jim) Seko of Lincoln, Neb.; and a son, Steven (Susan) of Grinnell. She also is survived by 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, John Daly; and two daughters-in-law, Coleen and Barb.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gail; two sons, Rick and Thomas; a sister; and two brothers.
Janie was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Louis and Winifred Blank Barnett. She married John R. Whitesell in Iowa City. John passed away in 1990.
Janie was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Silver Sneakers, IBEW No. 788, El Kahir Shrine Auxiliary and a former board member at Willow Gardens.
Janie was an accomplished musician, playing both the organ and piano. She was a talented artist painting pictures in oils as well as painting ceramics. Janie enjoyed going to the casino and especially the time spent with her beloved family and many friends.
A memorial fund has been established in Janie's name.
