Mary E. Coates, 92, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, with funeral services beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Tim Pridegon will officiate. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Mary was born Dec. 22, 1925, the daughter of Milton and Lucille (Wright) Redd. She graduated from Fort Madison High School. Mary later married Vernon Hunter Coates Sr. She was a member of Lifeline Ministries Church, Free Women in Christ, Good Ground Gospel Fellowship and the Seaside Lighthouse Association. Mary was a licensed and ordained evangelist. Mary enjoyed reading the Bible and teaching the word, attending religious services, feeding wildlife, and was a cat lover. She was known as "Mother Coates" to many.
Mary is survived by her son, Vernon Coates Jr., and daughter, Rosemary Daye, both of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Deon (Susan) Daye, Christine (Solomon) Barber and Vernon H. (Tawnya) Coates II; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother, George Redd Sr. of Fort Madison; and sister, Extine Griffieth of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 14 brothers and sisters.
