Mary Elizabeth Dickinson, 83, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Mary was born April 15, 1931, to Robert William and Viola Magdalena Sieren Martin in What Cheer, Iowa. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1949. On Dec. 26, 1949, she married Stanley Schmidt at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Sigourney. They later divorced. They lived in Rock Island, Ill., for 10 years. While there, she worked at the Showboat Inn. Mary returned to Sigourney and worked at Saners' Resthaven.
On Oct. 27, 1962, she married Glenn Dickinson in Sigourney. They were married for 26 years. Mary traveled with Glenn living in many different locations during his construction career. They returned to Sigourney in 1968. Mary worked for her brother, Bob, at the Sportsman Lounge. Mary also worked at the White House, Spaghetti's and later for Francis and Nancy Harris at Kind's Jack and Jill.
Mary's passion was cooking. She delighted in cooking for the parish priests from Father Lollich to Father Charles. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society, serving as president for over 20 years. Mary enjoyed bowling, cheering for the Sigourney Savages and watching old movies and any and all sports. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She shared the joys she found in life with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn; and her brother, Robert H. Martin.
She is survived by her children, Jenny Marie (Dave) Thompson of Sigourney, Dan Schmidt (Sheila Holland) of Cedar Rapids, Robbie (Bill) Albertson of Tiffin and Deborah Kay (Randy) Schultz of Sigourney; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Nov. 17 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Sigourney. Burial: Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established.
