Mary Catherine Massey Pilkington, 83, of Cedar Rapids, fell asleep with the Lord on Monday, January 26, 2026, at Cottage Grove Place. A private family service will be held at a later date at St. George Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids. Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Mary and her family.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Catherine Pilkington; a niece; nephews; and the Daoud and AbouAssaly family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John Pilkington; her parents; and many beloved family, friends, and pets.
Mary was born on November 26, 1942, daughter of Norman and Catherine Lewers Wall Massey, in Honolulu in the territory of Hawai’i. She was a boarding student at the Anoakia School for Girls in Pasadena, California, and she later earned her dental assisting degree. Mary married the love of her life, John Arden Pilkington, on July 23, 1964, in Vista, California. She owned and operated her own dog grooming business for many years in San Diego. Mary was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, a lifelong Daughter of Hawai’i, and a member of the Cedar Rapids Welcome Club.
As a child, Mary rode horses in competition and always had many animal companions. She showed Dobermans and Poodles competitively in California. Mary enjoyed entertaining with family and friends and had distinct personal style. She was also an avid reader, and enjoyed sewing and quilting. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
Mary’s family extends their sincere thanks to the Cottage Grove Place and Hospice of Mercy staff for their wonderful care.
Memorials may be directed to St. George Orthodox Church.
