MARY CAROLYN HOGG
Cedar Rapids
Mary Carolyn Hogg, 64, of Cedar Rapids, passed away
on the evening of March 10, 2022, at St. Luke's Hospital surrounded by her siblings and other family members. She had been admitted to St. Luke's in the early morning hours of March 8, with severe acute pancreatitis.
Mary was born Sept. 21, 1957, in Iowa City, the oldest child of Robert and Carolyn Hogg. She was a 1975
graduate of City High School. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa, a teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa, and both a master's degree in communication and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Iowa.
Mary spent most of her professional career working in education, including 27 years on the faculty in the communication departments at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and the Western Illinois University Quad Cities campus in Moline.
Mary exemplified the idea of being a lifelong learner and continued to take classes in other fields while teaching communication courses. While at Western Illinois University, she received a post-bachelor's certificate in museum studies and a master's degree in counselor education.
After retiring from Western Illinois University in 2018, Mary began working as a guidance counselor at Burlington (Iowa) Notre Dame Schools. As she recovered from a triple bypass surgery in 2019, Mary retired and moved to Cedar Rapids.
A woman of great faith, Mary in 2021 completed an online master's in religion from Trinity School of Ministry and was training to become a certified spiritual director. She grew up as a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City and was later a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport. In Cedar Rapids, she has been a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was inducted into the Order of St. Luke in 2018 and has been teaching courses on "The 26 Healing Miracles of Jesus" through Christ Episcopal Church.
Mary was known for her good-hearted nature and made friends easily throughout her life. She was a member of P.E.O., played in a local bridge club and often traveled with and to see friends. She loved the arts and seized opportunities to grab a microphone and lead whatever proceedings were taking place. She relished being Aunt Mary to her nephews and nieces, organizing their Christmas-time "variety shows," sending them cards for every holiday, and showering them with gifts on their birthdays and other occasions.
Mary is survived by her sister, Barbara (Edward) Hogg Chrabaszcz of Kenilworth, Ill.; brothers, Allen (Sabina) Hogg of Downers Grove, Ill., and Rob (Kate) Hogg of Cedar Rapids; surviving nieces and nephews are Mason Chrabaszcz of Nashville, Tenn., Carlyn Chrabaszcz and Jacob Chrabaszcz of Kenilworth, Jonathan Hogg and Dylan Hogg of Downers Grove, Robert Hogg of Northridge, Calif., Dorothy Hogg of Chicago and Isabel Hogg of Cedar Rapids; and other survivors include Ann Hogg, her father's widow, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 22, at Christ Episcopal Church, 220 40th St. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Center, 120 Boyson Road, Hiawatha, IA 52233.
