Mary Carol Van Hoeck, 87, of Marion, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha, died Monday, March 7, 2022, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Services: funeral
Mass will be held at
10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, by the Rev. David O'Connor. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service
and rosary will be held at
4 p.m. Monday, at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may also visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m., and at the church after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Mary (Jeff) Harris of Marion and Lisa (John) Spelman of Farmington, Minn.; four sons, Charles (Kathy) of Marion, Douglas (Barbara) of Cedar Rapids, Ronald (Janet) of Hiawatha and James (Dee Ann) of Cordova, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two more on the way.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John, who died in 2018; a brother, Paul Gatens; and two sisters, Rita Garwood and Gaylene Lowder.
Mary was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Paul and Helen Geiger Gatens. She graduated from Norway High School in 1952 and married John Van Hoeck on May 18, 1954, in Norway. She retired in 1997 as a Trust Pension Analyst after 19 years with Aegon. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and following the activities of her children and grandchildren. Mary and John were charter members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church. Following retirement, John and Mary enjoyed traveling. Mary enjoyed playing Bingo as well as her visits to Riverside Casino. She was active in volunteering with Birthright and the Hiawatha Care Center, and was a huge Hawkeyes and Cubs fan.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the charity of the donors choice.
