Mary A. Brecht, 102, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Solon, with Father Tim Sheedy presiding, with burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St.
Mary was born Feb. 2, 1913, the daughter of Thomas F. and Johanna (Dwyer) Kelly. She married Floyd "Bill" Brecht on Aug. 4, 1934, in Ottumwa. Mary worked for many years at Penick and Ford and Kilborn Photo, as well as working with Floyd in his various businesses, including the Safari Lounge.
She enjoyed oil painting, reading, cooking and baking. Floyd and Mary wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for many years and enjoyed the time spent with friends there as well.
Mary loved being with her family, especially being with the grandkids and great-grandkids.
Mary is survived by her children, Rosemary (Gene) Erenberger and Phyllis (Bernie) White, both of Solon, and Cheryl (Don) Williams of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Edwin (Eileen) Brecht of Marengo; sisters-in-law, Marion (Bernard) Brecht of Marengo, Evelyn (Keith) Kimm of Norway and Dorothy (Leonard) Brecht of Blairstown; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd "Bill," who died Aug. 14, 2007; grandson, Steven White; great-grandson, Willie Herdliska; brother, Emmett Kelly; and sisters-in-law, Helen Kelly and Kathryn (Ora) Kimm.
Memorials may be directed to HIS Hands Medical Clinic, St. Peter and Paul's Historical Foundation in her name, or to donor's choice.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice of Mercy and Oldorf Hospice House for their loving care for Mary.
