Mary "Betty" Elizabeth Quass Connor Zipperer, 99, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at West Ridge Care Center. Services: 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Thursday after 8:30 a.m. at the church.
Betty is survived by a daughter, Colleen (Dennis) LeClere of Salinas, Calif., four sons, Gerald (Wileen) Connor of Cedar Rapids, Richard (Carol) Connor of Decatur, Ga., Gregory Zipperer of Tempe, Ariz., and Timothy (Julie) Zipperer of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her husbands, Gerald Connor and George Zipperer; two brothers, Merle and Donald Quass; and three sisters, Helene Schatteles, Madellon Germscheid and Kathleen Pieper.
Mary Elizabeth was born July 2, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Katherine Maher Quass. She was a 1936 graduate of St. Patrick High School and a graduate of Cedar Rapids Business College. She was a former employee of Collins Radio and Builders Material. In May 1942, she married Gerald Connor in Cedar Rapids and they had three children. He died in 1947. On July 28, 1956, she married George Zipperer in Cedar Rapids and they added two more sons to the family.
Betty was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and National Catholic Society of Foresters and a hospital volunteer at Mercy Medical Center for many years.
Betty was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends, and for almost 60 years, she enjoyed playing canasta with her friends.
The family would like to offer their extreme gratitude to the staff of West Ridge Care Center for their loving and compassionate care.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Church or Hospice of Mercy.
