Mary Annis (Shaw) Ward
Marion
Mary Ward passed away Oct. 20, 2022, from complications of covid. The talented and ever-energetic positive light is now singing with the heavenly choir.
Mary was born in Vinton, in 1931, daughter of Don Shaw and Alma Odland. She lived in Fairfax and Cedar Rapids, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1949, later studying at Kirkwood Community College. Mary married John Russell (Russ) Ward Jr. in 1949. A talented musician and vocalist, she sang with her church choirs and community vocal groups (Marion Musical Literary Society, Cedar Rapids Community Chorale). Mary and Russ lived in Marion, before moving to Coon Rapids, Minn., in 1978. Mary worked for Sears, Northrup King, Kelly Services and Stanton Group as well as other earlier part-time work.
Mary’s family was the center of her universe, but also found time to be engaged in the community. In addition to her music, Mary belonged to the North Suburban Women’s Club, Sorority Preceptor PI, and was on the Coon Rapids Arts Commission for over 15 years. She was also very involved in the Coon Rapids United Methodist Church. Mary loved to travel and was always up for an adventure!
Mary is survived by son, Paul Ward of Coon Rapids, Minn.; son, Jon Ward (wife, Denise) of St. Paul, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Janis Ward of Independence, Mo.; and grandchildren, Tanna Ward, Tracy Sherman (husband Karl, children Freyja, Jareth), Maria Williams, Caitlin Ward, Charles Ward (wife Amanda, son Forest).
Mary was preceded in death by husband, Russ; son, David; daughter, Diane, her husband, Peter Wiliams; granddaughter, Lani; sister, Donna Brague; and parents.
Mary will be remembered for her warmth, loving spirit, sense of humor, high energy and her ability to engage anyone in a conversation! A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Coon Rapids United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m., with visitation at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mary’s family.
