Mary Ann Wright-Butts, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died peacefully Friday, March 17, 2023, at Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, with visitation just prior to service. Inurnment will be at the St. Paul’s Columbarium.
Mary was born Nov. 23, 1940, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Leander and Gertrude (Berns) Goebel. She graduated Manchester High School and Dubuque Beauty Academy. After beauty school, she married Richard Overmann and from this union had two daughters. She later married Orville Wright and then Gary Butts.
Mary was beautiful both inside and out. She will be remembered for her smile and dimples that won her high school Homecoming Queen, Dyersville Baseball Queen, and Oelwein Military Ball Queen. In her earlier years, she worked as a hairdresser, clerked at Hy-Vee grocery and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughters, Deb (Jeff) Schebler of Solon and Susan (Steve) Webb of Apple Valley, Minn.; grandchildren, Michelle Schebler, Scott Schebler, Kyle (Kristen) Webb, Natalie (Andy) Timm and Trenton Webb (fiancee, Amber Johnson); great-grandchildren, Hayley Webb and Evelynn Timm; siblings, Janet (Jerry) Happel of Guttenberg, Carolyn Sandman of Dubuque and Edward (Kathy) Goebel of Fairfax; and sisters-in-law, Barb Goebel and Janet Willenborg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Gary Butts; brothers, James, Melvin and infant Ronald Goebel; and brother-in-law, Paul Sandman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Croix Hospice, Strawberry Point; or St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids.
