Mary was born on March 15, 1933, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Dudley Leon and Ruth Derby (Thompson) Dewey. She graduated from high school in Highland Park, IL and Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Hamilton on August 4, 1956, in Highland Park, IL. Mary was a teacher in the Cedar Rapids Schools. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids for over thirty years. Mary was also active in DAR and P.E.O. She was also an avid Bridge player. For sport, exercise, and a good time, Mary joined the Aquarelles, which was a group of women who did synchronized swimming. The group did floating patterns without arm strokes. They propelled themselves through the water without splashing or kicking their legs or feet. The goal was to create a kaleidoscope effect. The Aquarelles belonged to the IAAA which stood for International Aquatic Arts Association. The group went to competitions in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, New Mexico, California, Florida, and Washington, D.C. After Jim retired in 2007, they moved to Florida, later returning to Iowa.
Survivors include her daughter Susan (Tim) Horne; son Tom (Karen) Hamilton; grandchildren Lauren, Kate, Ryan, Mike, Mia, Chelsea, and Cale; great-grandchildren Grayson and Crew; and her sister Barbara Bohnhoff.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Jim in 2022, son Robert, and brother George Dewey.
