Marty was born Feb. 22, 1951, and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, by parents Raymond Bertelli and Betty (Sorell) Bertelli. He graduated from Kennedy High School in 1969. While volunteering in Guatemala, Marty found his passion for medicine and later attended medical school at the University of Iowa, where he met his future wife, Kathy, in 1981. After his graduation in 1983, Marty completed his internal medicine residency at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis. Marty spent the next 25 years practicing medicine in Orlando, Fla.; Branson, Mo.; and most recently Pensacola, Fla. While in Pensacola, Marty practiced at Baptist Medical Park from 2001 to 2011. In his time with Baptist, Marty partnered with Florida State University as an adjunct professor and mentored young medical school students. Marty enjoyed traveling and returned to Guatemala on multiple mission trips in order to provide medical attention to earthquake victims. Aside from medicine, Marty also had a passion for restoring antique cars, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his black lab, Naya.
