Martina L. Schissel, 96, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, July 20, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Services: 10 a.m. Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A vigil service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m., and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.
Martina is survived by her sons, Dennis of Cedar Rapids, John (Dee) of Rockford, Ill., and Peter (Beverly) of Hillsborough, N.C.; daughter, Kathleen Green of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Annabelle Reader of Cedar Rapids and Mary Phyllis (Thomas) Bueter of Fort Wayne, Ind.; brother, George (Sue) of New Port Richey, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; parents, George and Minnie Vogel Osweiler; brothers, Cletus, Victor, Charles and Donald; son-in-law, Dale Green; and daughter-in-law, Beverly Schissel.
Martina was born May 14, 1919, in Keokuk County. She attended Clear Creek schools. She married Ralph N. Schissel on Aug. 16, 1941, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Ralph died in 1977. Martina was employed by Quaker Oats for 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Martina enjoyed doing crosswords, playing bingo, sewing, playing cards, cooking for her family and tending to her yard and garden. Above all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Jude Catholic Church Building Fund.
