Martin "Marty" Appleton, 68, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private memorial service will be held at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website under the obituary for Martin "Marty" Appleton, under the video tab starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1.
Following the continued guidance from health officials, physical distancing must be practiced, which requires a limited number of people allowed into the visitation at one time. The use of face masks or shields is required.
Marty was born Jan. 10, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Martin and Eleanor (Fleischer) Appleton. He graduated from LaPorte High School. Marty then proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1975. He enjoyed reading, traveling, The Beatles, Sci Fi movies, and spending time with family and friends. Marty was united in marriage to Janet Gerard on June 14, 2003, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was employed at Walmart and retired in 2013. Marty will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Appleton of Marion, Iowa; stepson, Forrest Berns; stepgrandsons, Clayton Cowden and Kaleb Berns; four siblings, Penny (Butch) Dodd of LaPorte City, Iowa, Jerry (Jan) Appleton of Fairfax, Iowa, Deb (Tom) Heffernan of Jesup, Iowa, and Scott (Lisa) Appleton of LaPorte City, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Deb Weber of Dunkerton, Iowa; special companions his dogs, Ted E Bear and Gizmo; and many loving extended family members.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Allen and Kent.
