Martin, John W.
John W. Martin, 84, of 7008 Parkdale Lane NE, died Saturday, March 27, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites by Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Survivors include a daughter, Cindy (John) Salat of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Terry (Marcia) of Des Moines and Larry of Hiawatha; and a sister, Betty Goldsberry, and a brother, Ed, both of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Chris (Rachel) Martin, Nick and Katie Martin, Jennifer (Ray) Ratcliff and Melissa (Aaron) Salat Hunsaker; three great-grandchildren, Carly and Logan Ratcliff and Alex Martin; a sister-in-law, Bev Martin; and a brother-in-law, Dick (Dorothy) Brondel.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a brother, Ken; his stepfather; a great-grandson, Carson; and his father- and mother-in-law, Ernest and Elsie Brondel.
John was born April 7, 1925, in Spirit Lake, Idaho, the son of Edward and Angeline Windsor Martin. He married Bethyl J. Brondel on June 8, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died in 2003. John worked at Iowa Steel for over 20 years and later was in maintenance at Rockwell-Goss, retiring from there after many years of service.
He enjoyed wood working, playing cards, the time he spent with friends and family, as well as proudly serving in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, March of Dimes or the charity of the donor's choice in John's name.
