Harvey Dale Martin, 86, of Monticello, Iowa, passed away July 13, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. will be followed by a memorial service honoring his life at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 16, at Berean Bible Church, 16107 County Rd. E-16, Monticello.
Harvey was the oldest of five children born to Rex and Lola Martin of Kirksville, Mio. As a young man, he worked on the family farm, was an entrepreneur by the age of 16 and served as an army medic in the Philippines during World War II. He met Kathleen White of Montgomery City, Mo., at the Kirksville Roller Rink and married her in 1948. He served stateside during the Korean War in Fort Riley, Kan. Harvey attended college at Northeast Missouri State, the University of Missouri and earned his doctorate from Iowa State University. He worked in education as a teacher and administrator until 1988, when he retired as president of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge.
He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and was an avid reader and collector. Harvey was also an extremely handyman to have around. He was skilled in carpentry, car repair, plumbing, electrical work and nearly anything he set his mind to.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Monticello; son, Michael and wife Susan Martin of Monticello; grandchildren, Timothy Martin of New York, N.Y., and Emily Martin of Fort Collins, Colo.; son, Jeffrey and wife Theresa Martin of Des Moines; sister, Loreen Ratliff of Kirksville, Mo.; sister, Darlene and husband Ron Moon of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harlan; and sister, Aileen Ward.
Harvey generously donated his body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
