Martha E. Stevens, 70, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Living Center East, surrounded by her loving family. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Services will be held at noon Friday at Gospel Tabernacle Church with the Rev. Mary Beets and the Rev. Wendell Beets officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Martha Evelyn Stevens was born Jan. 17, 1944, to Mose and Mary Blocker Walker in Aliceville, Ala. She was united in marriage to her husband, Joseph Stevens, on Nov. 23, 1972. He passed away in November 1998. Martha enjoyed volunteering and helping people. She was an active member of Gospel Tabernacle Church and Greater Word of Faith C.O.G.I.C. Church. She had a strong faith in God. Martha had an amazing ability with styling hair, cooking and gardening. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family, especially all of her grandchildren. She will always be remembered as a loyal friend, a loving daughter, mother and grandmother and for her witty sense of humor.
Survivors include, Elizabeth (Maurice) Coleman, Berlinda (Kenneth) Owens, Mary (Kenny) Horton, Shar (Glynn) Jones, Nicole (Cherokee) French, Carmen Stevens, all of Cedar Rapids, Maxine (Derek) Thornton of Richland, Wash., and special daughter, Hope (Wendi) Latchison; grandchildren, Cedric Moss, Zachary Owens, Blake Jones, Braxten Jones, Emanuel French, Eli French, Jennell Owens and Cameron Stevens; and great-grandchildren, Kobe Moss, Aniya Owens and Alivia Taylor.
She is also survived by her father, George Newton of Birmingham, Ala.; sisters, Mearice Burell and Mattie Bea Sterling (Joe) of Aliceville, Ala., Lucille Houston of California and Bertha Woodfork of Detroit, Mich.; brothers, Mose Walker Jr., Willie James Walker and Priness Walker, all of Aliceville, Ala.; and all her beloved step-children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; and her parents, Mose and Mary Walker.
Memorial donations may be directed to the
family.
The family would like to thank the amazing and dedicated medical staff consisting of Dr. Ramadugu, Dr. Saxena, Dr. Cogdill, Dr. Voigts, Dr. Atay, Jody Hornickel (ARNP), Dr. Dolphin, Dr. Gill, Unity Point Continuing Care Hospital, Unity Point Living Center East administrators and staff with a special thank you to Alexis, Jennifer, Jessica (ARNP), Caley, Devonne and Jessie.
