Martha Gwen Niemeyer passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 26, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Gwen was married to Larry Niemeyer on Dec. 20, 1969, in Adel, Iowa. The two were married for 52 years before Larry’s passing in July.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, 2022, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Cedar Rapids.
Gwen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her biggest joy in life was being a grandma. She was a fixture at all her grandsons’ games and events. She recently enjoyed spending weekends with her baby granddaughter. She is known for giving the best hugs to her grandchildren.
If you knew Gwen, you knew that she was the ultimate host. She loved having her family over for large meals on holidays & birthdays. She was an amazing cook and made sure to have something everyone liked at every meal. Gwen loved Christmas and made amazing memories with her family, hosting the most special Christmas celebrations every year.
Her special talent was making each one of her children and grandchildren feel like the most important person in her life. She talked to or saw her children every day, something they will miss very much.
After spending years at home with her children, Gwen became a paraprofessional with the Cedar Rapids Community School district. She most recently worked at Jefferson High School and was currently supporting students at CRVA, a job she truly enjoyed.
wen savored the quiet nights she shared at home with her late husband, Larry, and their devoted Cocker Spaniel, MJ.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Harriet Virginia and Ross C. Kreager; and her husband, Larry. Her family is comforted knowing they are together again.
Gwen will be dearly missed by her four children: Nancee (Ryan) Waterbury, Noreen Thurston, Nick Niemeyer, Natalie (Matt) Niemeyer-Lorenz; five grandchildren: Mason and Lewis Waterbury, Charlie and Harry Thurston and Olivia Lorenz; and her two brothers, Charles Kreager and Kenton (Anne) Kreager.
