MARLYS DEANNA
(RODENBERG) FRIEDLEIN
Guttenberg
Marlys Deanna (Rodenberg) Friedlein, of Guttenberg, received her wings at the age of 75 on Sept. 13, 2017.
Marlys, the first child of Morris and Delite Rodenberg, was born March 16, 1942. She graduated from high school in Guttenberg in 1960. On Oct. 7, 1961, she married Larry Friedlein, her high school sweetheart. They made their first home together at "The Round Barn" in Millville. They later moved to Larry's grandpa's farm just west of Guttenberg. Together they had three children, one boy and two girls. Marlys and Larry farmed in rural Guttenberg all of their married life.
She was always hands-on at the farms. The word workaholic would best describe her. She could be found mowing her lawn or chasing cattle. Each fall she would be in the field harvesting corn in her favorite piece of farm equipment a combine that seemed to have been made for her, containing her initials "MF" (Massey Ferguson).
She always was the favorite waitress at "The Kountry Manor," "Doug's Steakhouse" and "Lakeside Ballroom."
For 15 years, she enjoyed outfitting brides at her two daughters' bridal shop. She was an avid baker who was known for her pies and other baked goodies at the farmers market in Guttenberg, in addition to her grandchildren's items.
Marlys was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. She taught Sunday school for several years and remained active with several church committees. She also was a volunteer at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital gift shop. In her years, babysitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her the greatest joy.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Larry Friedlein; son, Jeff (Kari) Friedlein; daughter, Julie (Dan) Finnegan; and daughter, Jody (Troy) Mizell; grandchildren, Brandon (Margo) Friedlein, Taylor (Nick) Chase, Joe (Emily) Finnegan, Courtney Finnegan, Zak Mizell and Makenzie Mizell; great-grandchildren, Levi Chase, Maisyn Chase and Ashlynn Finnegan; brother, Roger (Pat) Rodenberg; sister, Susan (Dennis) Koehn; sister-in-law, Vondell Stockel; in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Derek Friedlein; her parents, Morris and Delite Rodenberg;
in-laws, LaVerne and Dorothy Friedlein; and brother-in-law, Bill Stockel.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, 207 S. First St., Guttenberg, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, and one hour before the service at the church. Funeral services will be at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, by the Rev. Shane Anderson. Interment will be at Ceres Cemetery, Guttenberg.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Dollars for Scholars or Crossing River Hospice.
