Marland E. "Mac" McCleary, 87, of Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2022, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion, Iowa, with the Rev. Bryce Bowers officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to service at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with full military honors by Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail.
Marland was born on July 2, 1934, near Whittier, Iowa, to Raymond and Nellie (French) McCleary. He graduated from Springville High School before serving honorably in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea from 1956-1958. He married Carolyn Claypool Sept. 14, 1958, in Marion and they have resided in Marion ever since. Marland was employed by CedaRapids, Inc. for 29 years and Marion Independent Schools 14 years retiring in 1995. After a 3 month trip to Alaska, he started driving school bus for Linn-Mar Schools until 2015. Marland was a member of Marion Christian Church, Past Master (1977) of Masonic Lodge 548 and spent many years in Scouting (Vigil member OA). He and Carolyn enjoyed many years of camping with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Carolyn; two daughters, Deborah (Gerald) Jackson of Davisburg, Mich., and Cheryl Kroupa of Northglenn, Color.; son, Kenneth (Elizabeth) McCleary of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Nicole (Joe) Moore, Cassandra (Matt) Todd, Benjamin Jackson, Kara and Andrew Kroupa, Matthew, Carolyn, Joel and Anna McCleary; four great-grandchildren, Avery and Jackson Moore, Kennedy and Kinsley Todd; brother, Dayle (Linda) McCleary of Springville, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Pat McCleary.
Marland was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arlys; brother, Dean McCleary; son-in-law, John Kroupa; and his dear aunts and uncles.
