Markillie, David E.
David E. Markillie, 73, of 5319 Megan's Place Dr., Wilmington, N.C., went to be with his Heavenly Savior on May 23, 2012. A memorial of David's life is planned for Tuesday, May 29, beginning with a 1 p.m. visitation followed by service at Harbor United Methodist Church in Wilmington, with the Rev. Donald Shields officiating.
David was born in Beardstown, Ill., on July 7, 1938, the son of Abraham and Florence Markillie. He graduated from Augusta, Ill., High School in 1956. He attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., and later graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., with his BA in business management. He was an accomplished basketball player for Augusta High and Western Illinois University.
He was employed with Container Corporation and later owned and operated The Barry Co. in Rock Island before moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was in customer service management with Weyerhaeuser Co. in Cedar Rapids before retiring in 2002.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth; his adored son, Barry; extended family, Keith, Sonny (Jim) and Diane Benton; and his faithful Shih Tzu, Grace. Additional survivors include sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harbor United Methodist Church, 4853 Masonboro Loop Rd., Wilmington, NC 28409; Alzheimer's Association or Pender County Humane Society.
