Mark was born on Feb. 8, 1956, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of LeRoy "Barney" and Margaret "Peg" (Came) Kula. He graduated from Central City High School, with the Class of 1974. On May 31, 1975, in Prairieburg, Mark was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Karen R. Slater.
