Marj was born to Faith and Wilfred Ostrander in 1926. She graduated from Marion High School in 1943 and began working as a secretary. She was united in marriage to Laurence L. Martin at First United Methodist Church in Marion on Dec. 20, 1947. She was a stay-at-home mother until their youngest was in school, then she went back to work as a secretary at Emerson Elementary School in Marion. She loved working in a school, but wanted to be a teacher, so she began her college studies in 1967, attending Mount Mercy College, and graduating from Coe College in 1970. Following graduation, she taught first grade at Emerson Elementary and in the resource room at Vernon Middle School, both in Marion, retiring in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth McGinnis, and, in 2013, Laurence, her husband of 65 years.
She is survived by four children, Deborah Martin, Cynthia Martin, Laura Mattison and Reed Martin (Christa), all of Marion. She also is survived by a brother, James Stanaway (Marilyn) of Boonville, Mo.; grandchildren, Katy Davis (Ben) and great-granddaughters, Elin and Colette of Marion; Elise Schmidt (Steve) of Oconomowoc, Wis.; and Tyler Mattison (Allison Pospisil) and great-grandson, Vance of Marion; Andrew Martin of Marion; and Claire Spakowski (William) of Chicago.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Summit Pointe Senior Living in Marion for their care of Marjory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion Independent School Foundation or First United Methodist Church in Marion.
