Marion Levsen Platner, 102, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at noon. The Rev. Nathan Williams will officiate.
Marion Platner was born on Aug. 30, 1912, in Doland, S.D., to Fred and Hazel Levsen. Marion attended Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, where she worked as a visiting nurse. She married Duane Robert Platner in 1939 and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1946. Marion returned to work in 1963 as a visiting nurse in Cedar Rapids.
Upon her retirement, she continued to volunteer as a nurse in various capacities including the well baby clinic and well elderly clinic. Marion was a member of Echo Hill Church, Daughters of the Nile and the Linn County Development Center. She loved playing bridge, watching sports, making crafts and reading. Marion spent many vacations in Saskatchewan, Canada, on Pasqua Lake. Her many friends in Saskatchewan will miss her as well.
Marion is survived by her children, Marianne (Harley) Weston, Regina, Saskatchewan, and Bob (Peg) Platner, Marion; grandchildren include, Blair (Myrna) Weston, Nelson, British Columbia, Tobrey Weston, Regina, Saskatchewan, and Brent Platner, Iowa City; her great-grandchildren include, Jordan and Macy Weston, Nelson, British Columbia, and Chalsea Balysky, Airdrie, Alberta; and her great-great-grandchildren, Sienna and Anneliese Balysky, Airdrie, Alberta.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Platner; and sister, Hazel Rohwedder.
The family would like to thank all the excellent caregivers at the Villages in Marion and St. Luke's for their compassionate care of our mother.
Memorials may be given to Linn County Child Development Center or to Echo Hill Church, Cedar Rapids.
