Marion
Marion “Babe” Chester Hansen, 101, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at the Winslow House in Marion. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Oak Shade Cemetery, with full military honors. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Marion was born on
October 25, 1922, in Marion,
the son of Hans and Meta
(Seltrecht) Hansen. He was a
lifelong Marion resident,
graduating from Marion
High
School, class of 1940.
After
graduation, he served
honorably in the United
States Navy as a Radioman
Second Class V2, where he
earned a Good Conduct
Medal. On October 3, 1947,
Marion was united in
marriage to Voanne Jean Miller. To this union, three children were born, Christopher, Katharine, and Scott. Marion worked with the Milwaukee Railroad as a Freight Conductor, until his retirement in 1982. He was an avid fisherman and traveled to Canada to fish many times over the years. Babe never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Marion is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Katharine Spalti and Scott (Debra) Hansen of Marion; five grandchildren, Rachel Kimble, Sara (Brandon) Briley, Holly (Jordan) Immerfall, Curt (Helen) Hansen, and Todd Hansen; seven great-grandchildren, Elsie, Lydia, Rowyn, Carver, Everett, Sloane, and Ximena; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 75 years, Voanne Hansen; son, Christopher Hansen; granddaughter, Michelle Hansen; brothers, Myron, Aaron, Lloyd, and Lyle Hansen; and sisters, Dorothy Maher and Fern McLaud.
The family would like to thank the staff at Winslow House Care Center and Care Initiatives Hospice for their care of Babe.
Memorials in Marion’s memory may be directed to Marion Independent School Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
