Marie Byers passed from death into eternal life, Sunday, Aug. 22, 2021. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, at Cedar Memorial. Graveside service at 10 a.m. Sept. 1, at Cedar Memorial, followed by a memorial service and luncheon at Stonebridge Church, 1829 Stoney Point Rd., SW.
She was born Aug. 19, 1926, to Margaret and Walter Sutcliffe of Palo. She graduated from Roosevelt High School at the age of 15, and went on to study at Iowa State Teachers College. She then taught at several Linn County one-room schoolhouses for several years. She worked at the Gazette for 31 years.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, David (Janet) Fattig of Alamo, Calif., Larry Fattig of St. Louis, Mo., daughter-in-law, Sara Fattig of Minnesota, Dan Fattig of Minneapolis and Lynn (Glenn) Vosatka of Cedar Rapids; her stepchildren, Bill (Ann) Byers and Pam Byerly; her brother, Joe (Corrine) Sutcliffe; also eight grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She additionally leaves her close friend, Tom Foster, who has lovingly cared for her for 10 years.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Byers; her son, Doug Fattig; her parents; and two stepgrandchildren, Casey and Justin Byers.
She was a longtime member of Edgewood Baptist Church and in recent years, Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Memorials may be given to Wounded Warriors or a Bible preaching church of your choice.
