MARIE M. PLAIN
Cedar Rapids
Marie M. Plain passed away May 16, 2016.
Born Marie Louise Marshall on June 20, 1933, to Verne and Clementine Marshall, she grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with four loving sisters and a brother. After graduating from McKinley High School, Marie attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
Known for her compassionate heart, Marie attracted many lifelong friends, including her husband, George Plain (died 2011), of 56 years. They met in college and went cross country skiing for their first date, thus were destined for a life full of adventure. During this time, Marie also became acquainted with her family's foreign exchange student, Wolfgang Wuehrer, who became a part of Marie's Austrian "family."
After college graduation and a wedding soon after, the young couple spent time in New York state before eventually settling in South Bend, Ind. Marie raised her four (plus one) children with the same love she gave to her friends, Dave (Terry), Caren (Peter), George (Andrea), Alice (Shelli) and Roswitha Wuehrer (Dieter Koeberle).
Marie led an active life, first as a seventh-grade English teacher, then donated her time and energy to the First Presbyterian Church as a member of the Session and Sunday school superintendent. She also was an active member of Junior League and Wednesday Club. Marie also spent many weeks during the summer at Palisades Park on Lake Michigan. She followed an adventurous George to the wilds of Canada for family canoe trips and to many exciting places to ski.
Time in their retirement years was divided between South Bend and Vail, Colo., where Marie enjoyed the beauty of the mountains, especially during the summer with the blue sky and amazing wildflowers! She skied Vail well into her 50s.
Marie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She will be greatly missed by many, including her grandchildren, Brad (Lauren), Tyler (Brenae), Lindsey, Katie, Sarah, Megan, Alex and Kristen; and great- grandchildren, Tenley, Olivia, Henry and Jackson.
Donations may be made in Marie's honor to the Center for Hospice Care, Hospice House, 22579 Old U.S. 20 E., Elkhart, IN 46516.
