Marie Emma Matheny, 90, of Shellsburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a long illness.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will begin at noon Saturday before the service at the chapel. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Marie was born Oct. 18, 1925, in Shellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Lippert) Popenhagen. She graduated from Shellsburg High School in 1944. Following graduation, Marie married John "Ted" Matheny in 1950 and lovingly became a sister to Ted's 17 brothers and sisters.
Marie was proud to be a lifelong resident of Shellsburg and a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church and Shellsburg American Legion Auxiliary, Post 166. Marie worked for many years at Roy's Hometown Foods.
Marie is survived by her only son, James (Teresa); grandsons, Jason (Stephanie Gearhart) and Douglas (April Post); great-granddaughters, Scarlett and Rylee; her special nieces and nephew, Linda, Kay, Nancy and Robert; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews; brother-in-law, Robert Matheny; sisters-in-law, Helen Brown and Marge Beitz; and an enormous amount of beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Ted"; parents; and brothers, Carl and Louis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Marie's memory.
