Maribeth Sophia Altenhofen Peyton, 84, of Sigourney, formerly of Marion, passed away from dementia on Jan. 7, 2016, at Sigourney Health Care. Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marion. Visitation will begin at the church one hour before the funeral. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, is caring for Maribeth's family and her services.
Maribeth was born May 12, 1931, near Harper, the fourth child of Edmund and Gertrude Laux Altenhofen. She attended St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Harper, Van Buren No. 6 rural school near Sigourney, Sigourney High School and graduated from Thornburg High School in 1949. She then attended Iowa Success Business College in Ottumwa. On Oct. 15, 1955, she was united in marriage to Dale Dean Peyton of Marion at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
In 1991, she retired from Rockwell Collins after 40 years in administration. She later was employed by Nordstrom's for seven years, and moved to Sigourney in 2012.
Maribeth was a member for 60 years at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, life member of Marion Unit 298 American Legion Auxiliary and life member of Cedar Rapids Unit 788 Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She is survived by a brother, Clair Paul of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Patricia Altenhofen of Sigourney; sisters-in-law, Roseanne Altenhofen of Marion and Patricia Altenhofen of Newton, Kan.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband in 1976; brothers, Dean, William and Jerome; and one sister, Dolores Jeffrey Peterson.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Catherine McAuley House for Women or the Sigourney Health Care.
