Marian "Cookie" K. Zupke, 76, died Sunday, March 27, 2016, with her family by her side. A parish vigil service will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, followed by the family greeting friends until 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 1, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, conducted by Father David O'Connor. Friends may greet the family one hour before Mass. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Marian is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mary Score; son, Donnie Score; daughter, Cindy (Danny) Bryant; grandchildren, Brandi (Colin) Northway, Seth (Stephanie) Score, Zachary and Ryan Oder; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Liam Northway and Emerson Score; siblings, Ronald (Lana) Miersen, Virginia (Milt) Dempsey, Roger (Janet) Miersen and Richard Miersen; and 12 loving nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Katy, Amy, Charlene, Chad, Jason, Lori, Lacie, Michael, John, Matt and Mark, and their spouses and children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Doug; sister and brother-in-law, Narda and Larry Walters; nephew, Frayne Jr.; and her close friend, Martha.
Marian was born Sept. 30, 1939, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Dorothy (Burke) Miersen. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1958. On Feb. 14, 1962, she married Donald Zupke. He passed away Jan. 11, 2007. Marian worked for 21 years at Turner Microphone and another 21 years at Rockwell Collins. One of her greatest passions was for Campfire USA and Camp Hitaga. She attended Camp Hitaga as a youth and spent the majority of her adult life working there tirelessly and fighting to improve the camp and keep it open for future generations of children. She served as a board member, president of the board and was an executive director for Campfire.
Cookie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and in 1980, became a member of the American Business Women's Association, which subsequently became the WWA.
Cookie loved to travel and live life to its fullest. She enjoyed dancing, gardening and playing cards. Cookie had a very strong faith and loved the Lord greatly, but her greatest love of all was her family and the time spent with them. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial fund has been established in Cookie's memory.
