Margaret “Peggy” Scholz passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025, peacefully at home in Iowa City, Iowa.
Peggy was born October 18, 1937 in Salem, Oregon to Walter Ian and Mary Elizabeth Barhyte. She graduated from Grant High School in Portland, Oregon, and received her BA degree from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where she studied biology and mathematics.
Peggy married Paul Drummond Scholz on July 29, 1961 in Portland, Oregon. She worked as a senior programmer in the Physics Department at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, while he attained his PhD.
Peggy moved to Iowa City in 1967 when Paul began his career for the College of Engineering. She held several positions at the University of Iowa as a project analyst, data manager and computer programmer in the Department of Preventive Medicine, the State Health Registry of Iowa, and the Hospital Information Systems Department at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she stayed until her retirement in 1997. After retirement, Peggy spent time traveling, volunteering, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dr. Paul, and grandson Torrey. She is survived by her son Peter and wife Dr. Colleen of Nelson, New Zealand, and son David and wife Dr. Jill of Iowa City, Iowa. Grandchildren include Derrick, Corbin, Quincey, Adam and Jared. She is also survived by her brother Jan and his wife Suzie, brother-in-law Steve, as well as many nieces and nephews.=
Peggy requested any memorial contributions be made to the Iowa Children’s Museum or to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement designated for Hancher Auditorium.
Peggy’s life will be celebrated by her family at a private ceremony by the ocean.
