MARGARET O'MEARA
Cedar Rapids
Margaret Ann Hunter O'Meara, 96, died peacefully at home on Feb. 19, 2015, after a long struggle with old age, which she waged with her usual humor, grace and intelligence. She was visited and often surrounded until the end by her family and friends, all of whom adored her.
Born Margaret Ann Hunter in Des Moines in 1919, Meg first sought wisdom and adventure in California as a freshman at the all-girl Mills College. Fortunately for us all, Meg returned to enroll at the University of Iowa her sophomore year in order to find a husband. She found a good one in Bob O'Meara, the love of her life. Meg and Bob married in 1942, shortly before Bob shipped out to the Pacific. Bob died three years ago just short of his 94th birthday.
Meg is survived by her four children and their spouses (Dan and his wife, Sandra, Santa Barbara; Tim and his wife, Taufau, Cedar Rapids; Matt and his wife, Lisa, Seattle; Molly McCracken and her husband, Scott, Michigan), by her nine grandchildren (Megan O'Meara, Belize; Matt O'Meara, Toronto; Sa and Molly O'Meara, Cedar Rapids; Paki O'Meara, Samoa; Madeleine O'Meara, San Francisco; John O'Meara, Seattle; Kate McCracken, Michigan; John McCracken, Atlanta), and by her favorite great-grandchild (Robin O'Meara, Toronto).
We and her many friends miss her greatly.
Meg sought and kept friendships throughout her life. Her Lesson No. 1: You're never too old to make a new, good friend. Her Lesson No. 2: If you have a chance, take it.
