MARGARET HERMAN
Belle Plaine
Margaret A. (Van-Kerckvoorde) Herman, 90, lifelong resident of Belle Plaine, died Monday, May 26, 2014, at Highland Ridge Senior Living in Williamsburg. The visitation and
rosary will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at the Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 30, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine, with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Margaret was born March 2, 1924, in rural Victor, owa, to Belgian immigrant parents, Charles VanKerckvoorde and Rachel (Vuylsteke) Van-Kerckvoorde. Margaret married Albert Herman on Aug. 1, 1942, in Victor. Margaret and Albert farmed in rural Belle Plaine, until 1959 at which time they moved into town.
After farming, Margaret continued to be a homemaker. She later went on to work at Square D, Rockwell Collins, the Belle Plaine answering service, the University of Iowa and in home healthcare. Margaret was accomplished at sewing, making many
treasures for family and friends throughout the years. She also made the most delicious kolaches and knudle dumplings. Known as "Maw-m" to family and close friends, Margaret had a great sense of humor, wonderful smile, open, accepting mind and a caring heart. Most of all, she had the generous gift of keeping her family and friends close and well-loved. She will be sadly missed by many.
Margaret is survived by her six children, Dennis (Judy) Herman of North Liberty, Dave (Diane) Herman of Atkins, Jerry (Linda) Herman of Cedar Rapids, Angie (Jim) Patterson of Belle Plaine, Jeff (Julie) Herman of Belle Plaine and Mike (Cindy) Herman of Belle Plaine; as well as her sisters-in-law, Opal Van-Kerckvoorde and Joyce Eyler.
She also leaves behind a legacy of 15 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Leonard VanKerckvoorde, Raymond VanKerckvoorde and Frank VanKerckvoorde.
A memorial fund has been established by her children in her name.
