Margaret Josephine Easton, 94, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 30, 2016, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Craig Pettit, where she resided and received loving care for the past 20 months. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m., Friday, July 8, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will also take place from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Margaret's name may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, or Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
Margaret was born Nov. 5, 1921, in Grand Island, Neb., to John and Lydia (Roth) Heimes. She graduated from Ottumwa Heights Academy and attended Marycrest College in Davenport. She was united in marriage to Thomas Hanks Easton on Oct. 12, 1942, in Centerville. To this union, 10 children were born. Margaret was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her love for God, family and nature was always evident.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sharon, wife of Edward, who is deceased, Marion; Jean (Michael) Starr, Garrett Park, Md.; Mary (Dr. Jon) Hart, Decorah; Rita (Dr. Bruce) McCall, Bethany, Mo.; Nancy (Dr. Brian) Heineman, Grinnell; Michael (Carolyn) Easton, Burnsville, Minn.; Deacon Frank (Paula) Easton, Cedar Rapids; Sue (Craig) Pettit, Cedar Rapids; Dee (Paul) Youngblut, Sumner; and Jane (Lee) McFee, Grinnell; 31 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Straight, Adel, and Marianne Heimes, Savannah, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom, in 1993; her son, Edward, in 2013; her brothers, Jack Heimes and Joe Heimes; her parents-in-law, Roy and Grace Easton; Tom's sisters, Grayce Hill and Betty Murray; two children; and seven grandchildren at birth and through miscarriage.
