Margaret Louise Clemens, 97, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at The Meth-Wick Community. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Church of the King, located at 3750 F Ave. NW, with the Rev. Don Glazier presiding. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Solon. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW.
Margaret was born July 25, 1916, in Iowa City, the daughter of Cyrus and Anna (Turkal) Fowler. She married John Clemens on June 26, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. Margaret worked beside her husband with the business they started, Clemens Canvas, for many years until they sold it and moved to Western, where they enjoyed growing roses and gardening.
She learned to ride a horse at age 50 and together they showed horses. When her husband passed, she moved to Cedar Rapids and joined Church of the King. She went to Bible studies, was a greeter and got communion ready. She made many church friends over the years.
Margaret moved to Meth-Wick Manor seven years ago into a one-bedroom apartment. In November of last year she became ill and moved to the Woodlands nursing home.
Margaret enjoyed gardening and crafting. She had a knitting machine and made beautiful sweaters and blankets for family and friends. She also got a group of ladies together at the Manor and taught the ladies how to make hats and gloves for charities. She played cards three nights a week. She also worked at the gift shop at the Manor.
She really enjoyed being with family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
We have lost a great loving Mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. We love you, Margaret.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Barb (Jerome) Sonka of Newhall; son-in-law, Bob (Marilyn) Barnes of Grinnell; five grandchildren, John (Sheila) Sonka, Kim McAtee, Jamie (Miranda) Sonka, Col. Scott (Rose) Barnes and Lt. Col. Stephen Barnes; and 13 great-grandchildren, Tyler and Blake Sonka, Paige, Amanda and Andrew McAtee, Baily, Lexie and Cole Sonka, Brooke and Nicole Barnes and Laura, Noah and Mira Barnes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Earl Clemens; her daughter, Janice Sue Barnes; a granddaughter, Laura Lee Barnes; two brothers, Don and Raymond Fowler; and a sister, Dorothy Willey.
