Leona Marek was born June 6, 1924, in Maquoketa, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jacob and Effie Heath Garien. She received her formal education at Bridgeport and moved with her family to a farm in rural Onslow, then later moved to Anamosa, where she was employed at Reliance Shirt Factory for a number of years. In 1942, she married Arthur Marek and with her husband purchased and operated the Gamble Store in Anamosa, until their retirement in 1984.
Leona was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, St. Patrick's Alter & Rosary Society and the Anamosa Hospital Auxiliary. She served on the Jones County election board for many years and was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member for over 50 years.
Leona was soft-spoken and kindhearted. She loved spending time with her family in Iowa as well as traveling to see her daughter in Alaska. One of her greatest joys was having family in for meals. A favorite place for her was the beautiful and scenic Wapsipinicon State Park where she and Art walked and took many enjoyable drives. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.
