Marcus Henry Carr, 90, of Gardner, Kan., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Sept. 16, 2015, at the Olathe Hospice House after a brief illness.
Marcus was born June 24, 1925, in Burt, Iowa, to
Allan Goodspeed and Ruth Mae (Stoddard) Carr. He grew up in Bancroft, Iowa, and graduated from Bancroft High School in 1942. He also completed one year in the School of Business at Waldorf College in Forest City.
In the fall of 1943, Marcus enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in Okinawa and Korea during and after World War II. While in Korea he earned the rank of sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He will be remembered as part of America's "Greatest Generation."
On June 24, 1948, he married the love of his life, Clarissa Ann Funk, in Waterloo. They shared and cherished 67 years together. They were the parents of two children.
Marcus worked for Borden Ice Cream Co. both in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. In 1962, he became a letter carrier for the Cedar Rapids post office. He enjoyed working there for 25 years, retiring in l987.
He was a retired member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
His Christian faith was a central part of his life. Marcus was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Cedar Rapids for over 55 years. He served as church treasurer for several years and was a past member of the church board. He had many friends in his Christian family.
Marcus was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian; granddaughter, Caroline; brothers, Robert, Warren (infant), Donnie, Hughie, Allan (Pike), James (killed in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II), Max and Jack; and sister, Caroline.
He is survived by his loving wife, Clarissa; daughter, Diana (Paul) Stevens; brother, Larry; and sisters, Phyllis Lambrecht, Bonnie Rote and Cindy Rote. He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Linda Carr; grandsons, Pete (Kelly) Carr, Quinn (Stephanie) Carr and Drew (Christina) Stevens; granddaughters, Maggie Carr and Hilary (Dustin) Nekvinda; and seven great-grandchildren.
We will remember Marcus for his Christ-like example, sharp wit, kindness, selflessness and loyalty to the Iowa Hawkeyes. He will be greatly missed. We look forward to the day we will be reunited in God's Kingdom according to God's promise.
The family will receive friends for a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at College Church of The Nazarene - Garrett Chapel in Olathe, Kan. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
The family wishes to specially thank the caregivers at the Olathe Hospice House, the staff and nurses at OMC 4th floor and Drs. Blake, Opie and Punswick.
