MARCIA (MARCY) RAE URBAN
Cedar Rapids
Marcia (Marcy) Rae Urban, 68, of Georgetown, Texas, and formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas.
A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church, Georgetown, Texas, on July 22, 2017. Marcy was cremated; a few of her ashes were given to family members and a few were sprinkled on her dad's grave in Swisher, Iowa.
This is not your ordinary obituary. Marcy was not your ordinary spirit. She has joined her father, Ramon Urban, in a uniquely shared destiny both victims of acute leukemia, both dying at MD Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas, 45 years apart. Diagnosed last November, she remained positive and courageous throughout her treatment.
Marcy was born in Boise, Idaho, on Feb. 17, 1949, firstborn child of Maxine and Ramon Urban. She was raised in Cedar Rapids and attended Jefferson High School, where she was part of the National Honor Society and editor of the school newspaper. She was a very talented and accomplished writer. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a teaching degree, and taught in Fort Dodge, Iowa, before moving to McAllen, Texas. She was an outstanding, dearly loved bilingual teacher in McAllen, and also in Georgetown, Texas, inspiring and encouraging hundreds of kids through the years.
After helping children for 25 years, she switched to helping families find homes, opening her own real estate company, Urban Homes and Land, in Georgetown. Her clients loved her and the TLC that she provided. She was very active in the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, and increased their participation with her engaging and entertaining personality. She was one of a kind: compassionate, kind, funny, opinionated, honest and fiercely loyal. She deeply loved her family, her many friends, Georgetown, the Chamber, the children she taught through the years, and serving her real estate clients. She was a champion for the underdog, and lived her life with passion, integrity and a servant's heart. We will miss her sharp wit, keen intelligence, her sense of humor, her infectious laugh and her caring soul. Rest in peace, Marcy! You were loved by many, and will be greatly missed.
Marcy is survived by her husband, Michael Cox; children, Joshua (Jennie) Glenn, Nicholas (Jennifer) Glenn, Dr. Travis Cox (Kathy Serrano) and Kiri Cox; mother, Maxine Urban Vanderlind; stepfather, Ed Vanderlind; brothers, Kevin (Sandy) Urban and Brett (Leslie) Urban; sisters, Rita Urban Jelinek (Craig) and Kim Urban; grandchildren, Samuel Glenn, Parker Glenn and Natalie Glenn; furry friends, Pancho Villa and FiFi Marie LePew; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Ramon Urban.
If you are so inclined, donations can be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or MD Anderson Cancer Center, for research or patient support.
Thank you to all who extended thoughts and prayers during Marcy's seven-month illness. She would ask that you keep her memory alive with a random act of kindness every day, small or large, to help make this world a better place. Do this in her memory, and her light will never go out.
