Marcella F. Listebarger, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 19, 2022, at West Ridge Care Center, following a brief illness.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with Fr. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial at the Fairfax Cemetery will follow.
Marcella was born Sept. 9, 1926, to John L. and Mary (Dreml) Schott of Hills, Iowa. Following graduation from St. Mary's High School in Iowa City, she attended Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, and completed two years of secretarial education. Moving to Chicago, Marcella worked for the Sunbeam Corporation. Upon her return to Eastern Iowa, she was employed by several local businesses, and subsequently became secretary to the superintendent of the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
On Sept. 2, 1950, Marcella was united in marriage to John Franklin Listebarger. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to John's death in 2016. "Marc" was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. As John's wife, she also cared for his parents as they aged and their Century Farm homestead. Marcella enjoyed her extended family and friends. She will be missed by all who have come to know and love her. A lifetime Catholic, Marcella was a long-time member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and St John 23rd Parish in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Marcella is survived by her five children, Susan Toys (Bob) of Dillon, Colo., James Listebarger of Dublin, Ohio, Janet "Jamie" Listebarger of Bemidji, Minn., John (Theresa) Listebarger Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tom Listebarger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Marcella's family includes five grandchildren, Aaron (Nicole)Toys of Silver Spring, Md., Lauren Toys of Aliso Viejo, Calif., Hanna Listebarger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Evan Listebarger of Boulder, Colo., and John (TeraJade) Listebarger III of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; husband John "Frank"; her two sisters, Genevieve Daniel and Delores Zentz; and brother, John "Bud" Schott.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Iowa, Mercy Hospice and St. Matthew Catholic Church.
The family would like to express their gratitude to MeadowView Memory Care Village where Marcella resided happily for six years. We extend our sincere thanks to Mercy Hospital, West Ridge Care Center, and Mercy Hospice, for the fine care provided to Marcella during her final days. And, to John, Theresa and Tom, please accept our heartfelt gratitude for consistently contributing to our mother's quality and longevity of life.
