Maiers, Robert J.
Robert J. Maiers, 71, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at his home after a short illness, with his family at his side. A Mass of Celebration will be held at 10. m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manchester. A gathering to celebrate Bob's life and a luncheon will be held at St. Mary's Parish Center immediately following the services. There will be no public visitation.
Survivors include his wife and best friend for 48 years, Sharon; five children, Chris Taylor (Kevin) of Fairview, N.C., Sherri Forkenbrock (Shorty Knoche) of Edgewood, Bob Maiers (Angela) of Clive, Kim Huber (Kurt) of Kennesaw, Ga., and Mary Phillabaum (Dick Seehase) of Manchester; eight grandchildren, Allison Hemann (Blake), Chase Forkenbrock, Zach Taylor, Karlee Taylor, Nicole Phillabaum, Megan Huber, Ryan Maiers and Abby Maiers; his two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Caroline Hemann; his mother, Grace Maiers of Manchester; and his sister, Marilyn Harder of Salinas, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Maiers.
Bob was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Dyersville, Iowa, and raised in the Edgewood area. He graduated from Edgewood High School with the class of 1958. He and Sharon began farming shortly after marriage in the Dundee area. He looked forward to every day working the land and raising livestock. He also did land appraisal work for several years.
In 1987, he and Sharon started spending their winters in the south; the last 18 years at their home in Mesa, Ariz. Bob and Sharon loved to travel and visited many different countries.
Bob was an accomplished woodcarver. He taught classes in Arizona during the winter months and showed in competitions throughout several states. He particularly enjoyed carving caricatures. His other hobbies included square and round dancing, stock car racing, Tuesday Euchre Club, following West Delaware High School sports, and watching his grandchildren become young adults.
