Lyle E. Vance Sr., 72, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services: 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 17, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Lyle was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Clarksville, Iowa, the son of Willie and Irene (Gallmeyer) Vance. He graduated from high school in Hazleton. Lyle entered the U.S. Navy in 1961, serving during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge in 1966, Lyle went to work for Quaker Oats as a machine operator. He retired in 2001 after 35 years. On May 11, 1991, Lyle married Carol Hadrava in the Little Brown Church, Nashua.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Carol of Cedar Rapids; his children, Irene Corson, Martha Vance and Sue Helman, all of Johnstown, Pa., Lyle Vance Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Amanda Vance of Oelwein, Brian Vance of Independence, Helen (Bill) Greene of Oelwein, Mike (Barbara) Vance of West Virginia, JoLynne (Milt) Giersberg of Cedar Rapids and Bill (Amy) Kiesel of Cedar Rapids; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth (LaVonne), Danny (Florence), Frank, Tom (Edna), Marion (Carol), Robert, Pat and Bill (Marietta) Vance; and sisters, Bernadine Johnson, Nancy Torus and Mary Jo (Frank) Thurn.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Irene Vance, and his sister, Rhonda "Sue" Vance.
Lyle loved children and being the Westdale Santa. He enjoyed gardening and wintering in Florida.
