Lundberg, Roy Elmer
Roy Elmer Lundberg, 91, of Vinton, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at First Presbyterian Church in Vinton, with Gene Spicer officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth St., in Vinton. Burial will be at International Cemetery, rural Luzerne.
A memorial fund has been established.
Roy was born Aug. 11, 1922, near Salem, S.D., to Frans and Edla Larson Lundberg. He was confirmed at nearby Center Lutheran Church and graduated from Salem High School. He served in the United States Army Air Force as a weather observer.
On May 20, 1951, he married Martha Straka at First Congregational Church, Belle Plaine, Iowa. They lived in Belle Plaine, Van Horne and Atkins during his years as a lineman for Iowa Electric Light and Power Co., and moved to Vinton in 1969 when he became manager of the company's Vinton office. After his retirement, he worked for many years at Phillips Funeral Home.
Roy served in many civic organizations in Atkins and Vinton. He was a volunteer fireman in Atkins and on the school board of Atkins Consolidated Schools. He was the last surviving member of the board that in the late 1950s established the building of a new school in Atkins. He was a member of the Vinton Planning and Zoning Commission, the board of directors of Eden Mutual Insurance Association, the board of the Vinton Country Club, and served a term as president of Vinton Noon Kiwanis Club. Roy was in the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57. He was active in the Atkins Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church and the First Presbyterian Church, Vinton, as deacon, elder and choir member. He enjoyed music, sports, playing golf and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Martha of Vinton; sons, Thomas (Richard Christensen), Fort Collins, Colo., and Gary (Betsy), Plano, Texas; grandson, Ben, New York, N.Y.; granddaughter, Riley, Plano, Texas; a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepsister, Alvah Skoglund; and sisters, Esther Osterberg, Myrtle Hand, Hazel Seaborn and Mildred Lobien.
