Lumir Joseph Vondracek, 97, of Ely, passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2023, at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, where military rites will be conducted. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Lumir was born Aug. 5, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Joseph and Mary (Kucera) Vondracek. He served in the United States Navy from Nov. 4, 1943, until honorably discharged on June 14, 1947. Lumir was united in marriage to Rose A. Machacek on May 4, 1960.
He was the owner and operator of 16th Avenue Meat Market. He was one of the founding merchants in the Czech Village who helped form an association to preserve Czech heritage in Cedar Rapids. Lumir loved mushroom hunting, gardening, Czech food and dancing, his Czech heritage, sharing stories with friends and his Pivo and apricot brandy. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 909, WFLA/Better Life.
Lumir is survived by his sisters-in-law, Barb Vondracek, Arlene Vondracek and Michelle Vondracek; as well as many nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, son Bob Burrell, and his brothers George, Jerry, Joe (Jean), Ray (Betty Bedell), Wes, and an infant brother, Roy Vondracek.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
