Loyd Poppe
LOYD POPPE Strawberry Point Loyd E. Poppe, 86, of Strawberry Point, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was born July 2, 1927, the son of Walter G. and Lavonna (Lage) Poppe. Loyd was proud of his education at Sheridan No. 9 in rural Mount Joy, where he was the only one in his grade for the last three years. He graduated at the top of his class. Throughout his life he continued to learn from experience. On Dec. 5, 1948, Loyd was united in marriage to Helen Farrance at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Davenport. He loved her dearly and said she was the cutest little thing he'd ever seen. Loyd and his wife were partners in life. Together they farmed near Mount Joy, Princeton, and in 1964, moved to Strawberry Point. In the early years, Loyd supplemented their income with employment at Oscar Mayer. He was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Card Club and the Northeast Iowa Antique Association. He enjoyed hard work but had lots of fun with horses, old tractors, machinery and parades. Loyd is survived by seven children, Susan (Roger) Ward of Epworth, James (Pamela) Poppe of Des Moines, Barbara Cole of Ely, Beverly (David) Pech of Lamont, Loyd Jr. "Ed" of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., Kenneth (Debra) Poppe of Norwalk and Patricia (John) Grimes of North Feedom, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one more on the way; a brother-in-law, Arthur Farrance of Rock Island, Ill.; and two sisters, Ethel Arp of Eldridge and Ruby Paustian of Davenport. Loyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen on Jan. 20, 2013; a brother, Robert Poppe; and a sister, Erma Poppe in infancy. Online condolences may be sent to www. leonard-mullerfh.com. Private family services will take place. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point. Interment: Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point.
