Lowell L. "Spence" Spencer passed away Oct. 10, 2014, at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Yuma, Ariz. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 4, 1938.
Lowell is survived by his children, Debbie R. Foight of Grand Island, Neb., Robert Spencer of Bremerton, Wash., Daniel W. Spencer of Lexington Park, Md., Patricia Sue Spencer of Yuma, Ariz., and Frankie Sandall of York, Neb.; two sisters, Kay Sue Petersen of Davenport and Marna M. Melsha of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepdaughters and their families, several nieces and nephews; and four cousins.
Spence lived in Yuma during the 1960s and 1970s, and then returned to Iowa, where he was a longtime taxicab driver. He returned to Yuma in 2009 and had volunteered at the AA Central Office for the past three years. He had received his 12th year sobriety coin in June of this year. Spence also helped chair the Sunday evening meeting with his good friend, Gene Halama, also of Yuma.
A private memorial for Spence will be held in November.
