Lowell was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Fairmont, Minn., to Albert and Malinda (Huse) Schoer. He was baptized Jan. 25, 1931 and confirmed April 2, 1944 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sherburn, Minn. He graduated from Fairmont (Minnesota) High School in 1949 and from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn., in 1951. After teaching one year at Immanuel Lutheran Day School in Gaylord, Minn., he entered the U.S. Navy as a musician (trumpet) and served four years.
He married Corinne Leanna Hoefker of rural Lakefield, Minn., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rost Township (Minnesota) on May 29, 1954. Lowell and Corinne met while at Bethany College and the two enjoyed nearly 62 years together before his passing.
He earned his BA (1958), MA (1959), and PhD (1961) from the University of Iowa and joined the faculty of the College of Education in 1961. During his career at the university, he served in a number of different capacities, including a period as interim dean during the 1980s.
Lowell was an active and committed member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod (LC-MS). He and Corinne were longtime members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Iowa City, before becoming charter members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Coralville. Throughout his life he served in a number of leadership positions at the local, regional and national levels for both the synod and the Lutheran Laymen's League.
Lowell was a lifelong learner and educator who could communicate with people on many levels. He had a great knowledge and interest in theological, educational and psychological topics and enjoyed in-depth discussions about them. Yet he was equally at ease and happy having a silly conversation with one of his grandchildren or bantering with a friend. He also was an avid nature lover who greatly enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was going on birdwatching excursions with Corinne, tromping around the North Woods of Minnesota or simply doing chores at home.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, three brothers and a nephew.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Corinne; their four children, Renee Schoer of Valparaiso, Ind., Alan and Toni Baur Schoer of Dubuque, Jonathan Schoer and Deborah Fedge of Valparaiso, Ind., and Darren Schoer and Julie Horst of Madison, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
