Louise Beltramo, 93, died at home on March 14, 2014.
She was born in Mexico, the daughter of Louise and Filipe Beltramo, who lived in both Mexico and the United States. Her formative years were in Baton Rouge, La.
She received her B.A. degree in kindergarten and primary education at Louisiana State University. She received her M.A. degree and Ph.D. at the University of Iowa in 1949 and 1954, respectively. She served for eight years as a teacher in daycare centers and in public, parochial and college laboratory schools before becoming a member of the faculty of the College of Education at the University Iowa in 1954. She retired in 1991 as professor of education, with specialization in early childhood and early reading.
Ms. Beltramo was the co-developer of five teacher training films as well as co-author of the accompanying teaching manuals. She was also a co-investigator of two cooperative research projects for the U.S. Office of Education. She was co-director of one of the U.S. Office of Education First Grade Reading Studies in 1966.
She was national vice-president of Pi Lambda Theta and a charter member of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Ms. Beltramo was a member of the National Council for Teachers of English, International Reading Association, Association for Childhood Education International and the National Council for Research in English.
Ms. Beltramo was an active member of St. Thomas More Church and was an early faculty sponsor for the Newman Club at the University of Iowa.
She was predeceased by her parents and five brothers and sisters.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be at St. Thomas More on Monday, March 17, at 10 a.m. It will be preceded by visitation at Lensing Funeral Home on Sunday, March 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas More or Iowa City Hospice Inc.
